Joe: Last game, I feel like I owe the Ramppen family this one. We talked last week about the Raiders, and I said it time and time again, I put my hands up and I said I am not saying the Rams are gonna win this game against the Raiders on Thursday night. It ended up happening. Baker Mayfield marched down 98 yards. Frank, Zack, Frankie, Michelle, the whole family, I’m sorry I put that in the universe as a… um… to show my appreciation for this Raiders team. Raiders at home against the Patriots. We just saw on Monday night beat the Kyler Murray-less Arizona Cardinals. I’m gonna go Raiders. I believe it’s a pick ’em. So, I’m gonna go Raiders. They win this game, they keep their playoff hopes alive. Ramppen family in attendance. I’m gonna go 24-16. 

Matt. It would be a nasty score like that. 

Joe: The Raiders get it done at home and keep their slim playoff hopes alive.

Matt: So obviously, I’m a Patriots fan, and I’m not really scared about the Raiders, um, just because I know they’re gonna throw the game somehow, usually. But, Rhamondre went down, and they had the two backup running backs. I think they’re both rookies, actually. They looked pretty good, though. So I think if the Patriots get the running game going, the Raiders’ defense is not great against the run, we know that. Um, if they get their running game going, I think they’ll win that game. It’s gonna be a close, like, defensive, weird game because the Patriots’ defense is great. But again, Davante Adams is like a different animal. Josh Jacobs is a different animal. Um, I think it’ll be close, though. Obviously, I’m gonna take the Patriots just because I’m a Patriots fan. I’m gonna be biased in that one. Um, but I think it’ll be a good game to watch. I will definitely be watching that one for sure.

Joe: Yeah, home stretch, four weeks left. Like we said fantasy playoff implications. Live updates next week. This is the home stretch. This is it we’re getting into the thick of it. Playoffs right around the corner. That does it for episode eight. I think episode nine tomorrow will be the JA Elite guys talking a little World Cup. Second semi-final game today, final on Sunday. Make sure to tune in and catch that. Otherwise, we’ll be back next week. Sounds good. Later.

Joe: Let’s get into football in particular our fantasy football league. We’ve been doing this a long time, you can correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think either of us have ever seen standings like this heading into the last week of the regular season. 

Matt: Yeah, it’s pretty crazy. I’ve had some close ones at the end of the year, but this is literally like there’s so many teams that can still make it. And because it’s a league where six teams make it out of ten, which is crazy, it comes down to the last week, all these tiebreakers and situations. If this guy wins, if this guy loses, it makes it interesting. That’s the fun part at the end of the year. 

Joe: So there’s so many different angles to this. The one clear-cut last place, we’re gonna call them the winner, not the loser. Our cameraman/producer/director Anthony Conte, he will be on our calendar that is set in stone. That has been a done deal. Pictures to follow. Zack Ramppen, who was in the race with Anthony pretty much the whole year. I’m pretty sure he started out 0-6. Yeah, he is 4-9 and has a shot of making the playoffs. 

Matt: He does. 

Joe: If he wins and three guys ahead of him lose, right? Long shot, but he can make the playoffs, which, to me, is the purpose of six out of ten. This is why I don’t do four out of ten that make it? The guys at the bottom, and there’s no calendar looming, who starts to lose interest, who stops paying attention, who maybe drops a guy for you in the playoffs, who maybe makes a trade for you heading into the playoffs, right? So it makes it much more interesting. I’m one of those teams, those three teams that Zack needs to hurdle. I’m in a three-way tie, 5-8. I have a chance that I can lose this week and be a 5-9 team. ESPN, that I’m learning more and more, isn’t the greatest fantasy football site to use. But the way it works basically is that me, Virg, and Joey, two other coaches here, we are in a three-way tie. And if it stays a three-way tie, it goes by points for, which I’m the clear-cut winner. However, if one of them falls off, now it’s a two-way tie, and I’m out. So much chaos going on at the bottom, so much chaos going on at the top. Five teams fighting for seeds one through five. Top two get a bye. I think you’re sitting in the one seed right now, two seed right now. 

Matt: Yeah, so it’s kind of weird. But you look at the projections, and it’ll show a different one than the actual bracket. But in the actual bracket, yeah, it shows that I’m still the one seed. So right now I still have a bye thankfully. Ever since we talked about that 9-1 record, I lost three straight since we talked about that on the show. Not really feeling that. Literally, the first time I was on it and I have lost every week since that show. 

Joe: So I think another loss this week. Okay, fine. If you lose in your first playoff matchup, whether that’s with a bye or without a bye, I don’t think you ever step foot on the show again. 

Matt: It would hurt. 

Joe: It would be pretty bad. So plenty to follow, we’ll have updated standings, playoff matchups, you know, the majority of us, except for I think two out of the eight of this league, they’re in the building. We’ll make sure to maybe get them on the show, a little budding heads, maybe some friendly wagers, see who’s going where. And then we’ll get those pictures and the date and time and where to purchase the Anthony Conte Bitcoin socks featured calendar that I have never been more excited for. You are the perfect winner. It would be perfect. I don’t care. 

Anthony: I’m not sure if I can take that as a compliment or not.

Joe: You’re gonna love it deep down and you’re gonna do the best job that any of us could do. Everyone has a level of awkwardness to us or whatever it is. You’re just gonna… Yeah, I can’t wait.

Joe: Before we get into picks and some upsets for this week, I know Virg has some thoughts on the Sean Taylor Memorial that took place on Sunday at the Washington Redskins football field.

Virg: It was an absolute disgrace and a poor effort on their third try to memorialize him. Sean Taylor is arguably one of the top three players in their history, and many people consider him their favorite player. The memorial involved placing an American from JCPenney right down the street from the field, using a wire mannequin with the wrong jersey and different sports brands on each piece of his body. It was not a statue, despite them using that word. While his family ended up being happy and were involved in the design, it was a sad and pathetic attempt by an owner who no longer cares and should sell the team. That was a disgrace.

Matt: I probably agree with you, I mean, I wouldn’t say a disgrace but I guess this was just because they had to do something and they knew that.

Virg: This was their third failed attempt at this.

Matt: I do agree having a statue just makes the most sense. It’s the best way to remember a player of that caliber for the franchise.

Virg: Pull up a picture of the Pat Tillman statue in Arizona, that’s what it should look like.

Matt: Yes, so again the statue definitely makes the most sense. Going back on what Virg said, the owner definitely didn’t put much effort into this and he just needs to get out of there. I think that is the biggest thing we learned from this. The only thing that is good from this memorial is that at least people have somewhere to go to remember Sean Taylor and what he did for this city. Joe probably has way more words on this.

Joe: I agree with everything you just said. I think the owner did a half-hearted job, that’s who he is and he gets away with whatever he wants. He’s not going to spend any more money than he has to, I get that. I think he had a Nike jersey with Adidas pants and World Cup cleats. It looks like it was totally thrown together, I get it. It wasn’t even a JC Penney mannequin because those are what, plastic? This was wire, I get it, it was thrown together. My two points to make. For one, the family loves it. Whether it was fake or genuine, I watched the video and the family loved it. We don’t matter when it comes to that. Two, I think a bigger disgrace was when last year they made a big 21 on the field and Mahomes and the Chiefs came to town. Patrick Mahomes brother, with his tik tok following, went under the rope into the area with Sean Taylor’s number and proceeded to dance on it and record it. That was a far bigger disgrace to Sean Taylor, and that was actually a nice little tribute. So this whole thing with the wire mannequin just shows that he’s probably selling the franchise, and who knows the stadium could be going soon too so maybe it’s easier for them to move. All I know in the end is that the family was happy and that is all that matters.

Virg: I agree with you that the family is most important in this situation. But, there are a lot of people who really relate to what Sean Taylor brought to their lives. The opinions of these fans both then and now do matter, just not as much as the family of course.

Joe: World Series is over, we’re pretty far removed from it. Winter’s here, winter meetings, off-season moves are starting to happen. Teoscar Hernandez is the first somewhat big piece to fall, but what I want to get into, what we want to get into today is the big three: Judge, DeGrom, Verlander. Obviously, two are super relevant to being in New York, Connecticut. Let’s start with, I guess, the third of the three. Virg, I’m gonna pass it to you, Justin Verlander. 

Virg: Detroit, he goes back home to Detroit, young pitching staff, do what he did in Houston for that pitching staff. Takes a little bit of a discount off of the 3 years for $130 million that he wants to get, like Scherzer. He goes and works with Casey Mize, Tarik Skubal, Matt Manning. He’s got their pieces there that make that team really exciting. So put him back to the top of the rotation and then finish off his career at home. 

Joe: That might have been like my 10th or 12th guess of what people said. I didn’t even think that one. I forgot he played for Detroit once. But if it makes sense, in that it follows this trend of life, like I think deGrom, when we’ll get to the second about Atlanta, you have the idea of going home where he came from, where you started, things like that. So I totally just didn’t think Detroit. 

Matt: So I’m not really the baseball guy when it comes to free agency stuff. 

Joe: You’re a golf guy.

Matt: Hear me out. I think, honestly, I think because he’s won already, I actually could see the Detroit thing. But I honestly, it could just be a play where, like, he goes somewhere where he wants to live, literally, like anywhere he wants to go. 

Virg: He could live anywhere. He and Kate Upton have more money than they know what to do with.

Matt: Oh no, but I’m saying during the season, like, you’re going to be at a home place more often. Yeah, I don’t know. I’d probably say he goes to… I literally think he would go to, like, a Florida team. Like, I think it would be like the Marlins or something, out of nowhere. 

Virg: Him and Alcantara, yeah. 

Joe: See, what scares me. I was gonna say Houston, that they resigned him, and then it came out, I don’t even know who said it, that he wants Scherzer money. And now, to me, that says, who’s gonna give him a guy that gave Max Scherzer the contract? I think he’s gonna go to the Mets. I think that confirms what most of us already know, that I think DeGrom’s moving. So I’m gonna go Mets for Verlander, and let’s transition that into… 

Virg: Does that domino fall first? Does the Verlander signing with the Mets, in your mind, happen before DeGrom signs, wherever you think DeGrom signs? 

Joe: I don’t know. I think they’re one and the same. Like, if Verlander comes, that confirms 100% that DeGrom’s gone. If DeGrom leaves and he confirms that, hey, we got Verlander money to spend or Scherzer money to spend, Verlander to the Mets.

Joe: To admit when I’m wrong, I had a great Mets take a couple weeks ago for the Wild Card round. Didn’t play out very well, but right now it’s 3-2 Houston. It should be 4-1. They should have been celebrating last night at Citizens Bank Park if not for a collapse in game one when they had a 5-0 lead. My Astros in five prediction would have been spot on, so I’ll settle for six on home turf tomorrow back at Minute Maid, Wheeler against Valdez.For the city of Philadelphia, it’s almost officially football season. 

Virg: No, no, like I said, six or seven. I don’t know what the first video actually put up as a number. I want to say it was six, so it’s now gotta be seven. But at this point, Philly still can come back. This is Washington Nationals all over again of 2019. You got young lefties, you got good veterans. Wheeler’s gonna go shove tomorrow. Then you either come back with Suarez, who’s been great all postseason, or Nola for the first three on Sunday, Suarez and then into that bullpen. 

Joe: Did Washington win two in Houston that year? Was it the same kind of layout? Usually three-two back to Houston. 

Virg: Pretty sure it’s the exact same layout. I don’t know about the games in between, but Washington won it in Houston on their field.

Joe: It’s one of two storylines, right? You know I’m all about the storyline. The Astros are far and away the most consistent team now down the stretch after losing the Dodgers, obviously. Are they just gonna figure it out and keep rolling? They’re unbeaten in the playoffs, right? 7-0. Hard to imagine that 87-win Philly team is going to take them down. But the Phillies, on the other hand, are a lot like that Nationals team, right? Everything’s clicking with Harper and Hoskins, Wheeler, Nola, top of the rotation. From top to bottom, all aspects of the game are clicking. I’m just going with the first storyline. Can’t move from the Phillies any longer. Astros in five.

Over the Astros

Virg: Just flat out don’t want to see the Astros win anymore. I’m over it. I want to say Pena has been amazing. Bregman has been amazing. Gurriel hasn’t been talked about enough. Framber Valdez has been amazing. Correa hasn’t been talked about enough. Everything is clicking for them. Consistency top to bottom. How they go after free agents, how they build to get here. Their farm system, hands down, have done a great job even after all the scandals. Phillies for me, it’s Harper season. It’s Harper season. It’s Harper season. He’s going to win now, and then at some point, we’ll get more into this as it gets closer. He’s going to win in the spring for the World Baseball Classic. So you put that right now. Phillies win, USA wins World Baseball Classic. But Phillies winning on the back of Harper. Stott has been amazing. We’re talking about a rookie playing shortstop for Philly. Every piece of this team is clicking.

Joe: Let’s start with our first video.

Ant: Boys, who’s winning the World Series?

Virg: Dodgers.

Joe: Can you be any less creative? You didn’t even finish your sentence and he goes “Dodgers”. Right, gone. I hate that it was the Padres that knocked them out. The fact that the Mets, Braves and the Dodgers are all out is absolutely insane.

Virg: I love the chaos.

Joe: Now we got chaos right so Dodgers are out, I’m sorry. Mariners are out, I’m sorry. Tonight’s game or today’s game in a way doesn’t matter I think Yankees or Guardians I think they’re both gonna get there they’re butts whooped by Houston as a anti-yankees fan I am almost rooting for them today because I would love to watch them lose to the Astros yet again. If they lose today it’ll be great, but if they win today and they got all their hopes up again, “this is the year we’re gonna take down the big bad Houston Astros” and then they’re gonna lose in five, so part of me is rooting for them.

Thoughts from a Yankee Fan

Virg: That’s really cute. Honestly I think Boone is slightly over managing with Taillon being scheduled to pitch yesterday, he should just be pitching he’s on normal rest, why are we pitching Cortes on three games? I don’t want to see a heavy righty Indians lineup. Like they have guys coming out of nowhere Gabriel Arias is going to hit for them, he’s now seen Cortez in the series, it takes them that quick to figure it out. I love Cortes but I’m a little worried. I thought Taillon was going to give us basically a quality start, like look good for the Yankees. I thought Civale might throw a couple hanging curve balls, get hit around the park a little. He was either going to completely go out and shove or get shelled and only go forward.

Joe: Does it matter for the next series?

Virg: I think it does, I think the Yankees give Houston a tougher time because Houston has to come into New York, than Houston having to go into Cleveland.

Virg: You talk about being creative.
 
Joe: I know it’s a little textbook but the Yankees and the Astros seem to play each other every year in the ALCS and it will be the same old story. I don’t care about Judge. I don’t care about Cole.
 
Virg: It’s boring, it’s boring.
 
Joe: Verlander is getting better as he gets older, it’s going to be the same old story. Astros on the left side, Mets on the right side.
 
Virg: That’s 2 wins there for the series, doesn’t mean they’re going to win the whole series.
 
Joe: Mets over Astros in 6. Okay, so who’s on the AL side for you with your precious Dodgers making it to the World Series. Lemme guess Yankees or Astros, take your pick.
 
Virg: I like the Yankees, I don’t love that they have a bye. I think they’re going to struggle in the division series. Seattle is my sleeper.
 
Joe: I was going to say where are your Mariners that you’ve been so high on all year? Where are they going?
 
Virg: J-Rod’s taking them to the World Series. Put Castillo on the mound, eight innings. Diego Castillo and Paul Sewald closing it out. We’re good.
