The Bobby Valentine Sport Show: Episode 39
Hello everybody and welcome back to another episode of The Bobby Valentine Sport Show. I’m your host Frank Ramppen, and let’s dive right into this week.
The NFL season has come to an end. Super Bowl Sunday happened about two weeks ago, now about a week and a half ago to be exact. Kansas City Chiefs are the 2023 Super Bowl champions. So let’s dive into it. We’ve got a month to go between the end of this football season and the start of the MLB season. If you’ve been following this channel so far, you know that I cover baseball (MLB) and NFL football. Now, with that little gap to go, it’s perfect timing to dive into the last couple of weeks before Conference tournament play of college basketball and then March Madness, one of my favorite times of the year.
Week 16 AP poll just came out for college basketball, so we’re about 15 and a half weeks through this college basketball season with about two and a half to three weeks to go. Early March is when those conference tournaments are going to start, make sure you catch those. And then after that, Selection Sunday is on March 17th, so under a month to go between now and Selection Sunday. We’ll have our brackets to fill out by then, and then that Thursday, the tournament starts.
So diving right into it, let’s get into the weekly recap, starting off this year’s March Madness college basketball coverage. This year, the 2023-2024 season for college basketball has been the year of the upset. Let’s go over the past three seasons’ AP top 10 teams on the road versus ranked opponents, versus unranked opponents. We’re going to look at the past three years: 2021-2022, last year, and then this year.
Two years ago, in 2021-2022, there was a total of 55 wins and 20 losses, good for a winning percentage of 73.3%. Last season, 2022-2023, there were 58 wins and only 19 losses for AP top 10 teams on the road versus unranked opponents, with a staggering win percentage of 75.3%. However, this season, as of Tuesday, February 20th, there’s a 40-39 record for AP top 10 teams against unranked opponents. That’s barely over 500, specifically a 50.6% winning percentage. This would be the worst winning percentage by AP top 10 teams on the road against unranked opponents in the history of the poll era.
So far, through 79 games, AP top teams have a 40-39 record on the road against unranked opponents. Pretty crazy stuff there. UConn just became the first unanimous number one in this year’s poll after Purdue got taken down.
