The Bobby Valentine Sport Show: Episode 43

Hello everybody and welcome back to another episode of The Bobby Valentine Sport Show. I’m your host Frank Ramppen and let’s dive into another week of the college basketball season. It is finally here, it is finally time for March Madness. Today, March 19th, 2024, the first four begin tonight. It kicks off with Howard and, um, I don’t even know who they’re playing, but the first playing game is Howard and them. Then Colorado State versus Virginia tonight too, I think that could be a great game. But action happening in Conference Championship week, Conference tournament week was unbelievable. So many unbelievable, unreal games, buzzer-beaters, plays, just upsets, miracle runs, just a whole week of insaneness for college basketball. And now we get into the nitty-gritty of it. March Madness is here. So weekly recap, let’s get into it.

21 non-one seeds won their conference tournaments. 21 of 32 non-one seeds won their conference tournament. That’s tied for the second most in the last 25 years, second most in the last quarter-century, most since 2016. Unreal. Five of the top six teams in the AP poll did not win their conference tournaments. The only one that did was UConn. They won the Big East. All the other five out of the top six lost. NC State became the second 10 seed to win their conference tournament ever, with 2006 Xavier. They did it when they were back in the Atlantic 10 back in 2006. And NC State, they’re the second team since 1939 to win five games in five days in the conference tournament. It was unbelievable. They went all the way from Tuesday to Saturday in the ACC tournament, first team to ever do that, five wins in five days in a row for them, starting off with a victory over the North Carolina Tar Heels in the ACC tournament. It was unbelievable. What a week it was. Temple, they were an 11 seed in the American, and they fell just short in the conference championship game of becoming the first 11 seed to ever win a conference championship. So, unreal week of college basketball, unprecedented bid stealing, the bubble this year was maybe the most insane bubble I’ve ever seen. And for the first time in the history of the NCAA tournament, there are two play-in games for 10 seeds. Never happened before ever. It’s usually 16s and 11s. This year, 10s.

Last AP poll of the year, let’s run through it real quick before we go into our plays of the week, because there’s multiple this week. Championship tournament weekend was too good to have just one. There’s five. And then our game of the week was unreal. So, we’ll go into it and then our tournament recap or tournament breakdown, hype up action. So let’s get into it. Last AP poll of the year and the number one overall seed heading into the tournament, the UConn Huskies. They were the only team that won out of those top three seeds.
