Meet The First County Bank Athlete of the Month: Diako Thupayagale

Each month, Bobby Valentine’s Sports Academy spotlight a young athlete who exemplifies dedication, growth, and passion for their sport. This month, we’re proud to introduce our First County Bank Athlete of the Month—Diako Thupayagale, a talented soccer player whose journey began far from Connecticut and whose ambition continues to drive him forward.

Diako’s soccer story started in Gaborone, Botswana, where his mother worked at a school running a grassroots soccer program. “She would take me along whenever she attended the practice sessions, and that’s how I got introduced to the game. From there, my love for soccer just kept growing,” Diako shares.

Since joining JA Elite, Diako has seen major improvements in his technical ability. “The training sessions are very focused and demanding, and the drills really challenge me to be sharp and precise with my technique. I’ve learned to push myself both in practice and during matches to stay technically sound,” he says.

Transitioning to soccer in the United States brought new challenges, especially the increased physicality and pace. Training with Evolution Physical Therapy at Bobby Valentine’s Sports Academy has been instrumental: “The intense drills and strength-focused training at BV have really helped me adjust. I’ve built the strength and confidence to hold my own, even against players who are much bigger and more physical. Now, I feel much more prepared and comfortable competing at a higher level.”

Diako is a true asset to his teams, playing as a central attacking midfielder (CAM), left winger (LW), and right winger (RW). This versatility allows him to adapt to his team’s needs and make an impact all over the pitch.

“Diako is a coach’s dream. He is always giving 110% in training and games, can impact a game at any moment, and increases the level, intensity and standards of those around him in training and games.. Not only is Diako a talented soccer player, he is also a great young person. He takes time to build meaningful relationships with his teammates, is extremely humble & respectful, and continuously leads by example. Diako has recently led his JA Elite FC team to the State Cup Finals as Captain, showcasing exceptional leadership on and off the field. The future is very bright for Diako. We’re honored to have him represent JA Elite in the Local, Regional & National soccer landscape.”- Paul Melitsanopoulos

Diako’s hard work is paying off. He was named Player of the Year with JA Elite and was the only freshman to play Varsity—both accomplishments he’s extremely proud of. While he hasn’t received college or professional offers yet, Diako is motivated by the dream of playing at the highest level. “I want to earn a college scholarship and use that opportunity to eventually reach the professional level,” he explains. His goal is to play Division 1 soccer in college and earn a business degree.

“Diako is an exciting player to watch continue to grow and develop. His desire to compete and improve each day is noticeable and we’re very happy to support his journey!” – Johnny Arteaga

Setbacks are part of the journey, but Diako faces them head-on: “I learn from my mistakes and use them to improve. I take responsibility for the mistakes and figure out different ways to improve so that I don’t make that mistake again.” Diako mentioned that Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan are his biggest inspirations. “They motivate me to go after things I want. They motivate me to keep pushing.”

Off the field, Diako enjoys playing FIFA with friends, finding balance between his athletic and personal life. Congratulations Diako Thupayagale, our First County Bank Athlete of the Month! We look forward to watching your continued growth and success—on and off the field.
